PDQ G4 500
Posted by: brams on 2026-04-23 11:29:37
Hi All,

PDQ with good PRAM battery and good main battery with Mac OS 9.2.2 works fine but freezes when charger unplugged freeze happens after around 5 seconds (consistent) stays frozen, cannot quit finder, so force reboot, if booted on battery, will reach desktop and then freeze in the same way. No SD or SSD just regular spinning rust, 3 partitions 2x 3.5 GB and the rest around 50 odd GB (last partition).

Tried with extensions off still the same thing, does it on 9.2.2, 9.2.1 & 9.1 but on 9.0.4 its fine no problem (9.0.4 loads PowerPC Enabler 9.0.4, 9.1 and later do not load any enabler)

G4 is Wegener Media so original Apple Card with a 7410 transplanted, using XLR8 cache enabler.

On 9.2.2 it works fine on charger, on anything else other than 9.0.4 is locks up, 9.0.4 is perfect on or off charge. 9.1 is an update over 9.0.4, tried 9.2.1 retail ISO (hang) and 9.2.2 update over 9.2.1 retail (hang)

Anybody seen this before or know how to solve it?

Thank you

This older thread has comments about reflowing things on Wegener cards (albeit pismo ones): https://68kmla.org/bb/threads/powerbook-g3-pismo-with-wegener-g4-having-issues.31592/

And the age of the card would put it in line with early lead free solder…..

But since it’s fine in 9.0.4 I would suspect maybe that’s not it. Does the XLR8 panel give controls for switching off caches, changing speed, or anything like that?

(also… brams? If you’re the same brams from maybe 20 years ago, PM me, it would be good to catch up!)

Hey dude, yes its me! how you doing long time no speak, yes would be great to catch up!.

I solved it, turned off "Allow Processor Cycling" in Energy Saver.

People are hard on Wegener, that's not to say some folks didn't have problems, but I have a G4 in my Pismo, 20 years + and still fine and the one in my PDQ which is also fine.

Thank you

P.S PM sent
