Quadra 700 Mainboard in IIcx case ...
Posted by: franklyn on 2026-04-23 11:02:17
The free spaces between the interface sockets could be filled/glued in with 3D printed parts, then filled with plastic filler and painted ...?

If it turns out well, perhaps even a Quadra 650 motherboard could be installed because of the three Nubus slot slots?

I’m also contemplating the idea to put a 650 in a Ilcx case or similar if I find one.
Do you reckon the motherboard will fit ?

Here is a video showing how to fit 650 in a 700 case

It should fit, I put a 7100 board in a IIci case and it works great, lines up with the PSU and everything. You need to dremel some room in the back for ports though, since they are different between the IIcx/i and the Q650/700. You can even trim the plastic around the lock tab (circled in pink) to open it up and serve as extra support for a PDS card - I have my G3 accelerator there. Only issue is the case is not wide enough to let me hook up the passthrough for the HPV card!

The end result is very nice!

No issues with heat extraction?

Edit: I realize I may have diverted from the original question quite a bit.

Yeah, my dad has a 650 logic board in a IIcx case. Needed rework for the ports as discussed, but otherwise not an issue.

@SophieRose has an 840av in a IIci case and I think @joshc had a Q700 in a IIci case.

I looked into the feasibility of putting even newer boards into older cases (the form factor didn't really change until the Beige G3 for many of Apple's machines), but the PCI machines have all their ports in a larger grouping away from the expansion slots instead of in a single row, and I wouldn't feel comfortable hacking a case up. I didn't do much more checking after that, but they basically should fit, although you'd have to solve the power supply and drives issues as the mounts might clash.

I remember what I was considering - I contemplated putting a Centris 650 board in a PM 9600 case because of reasons 😆

The hardest part was not removing the inner metal shielding plate to work on it.

It looks like the Q650 has the same port layout as the 700, but obviously has the extra Nubus slot. The port layout of the IIci is a little different. A shame, I'd like the extra slot (and... cheap RAM) in my 700, but I don't want to chop up the case.

Yes, I currently have a Q650 motherboard in my Q700 case. Reinstalling the original Q700 board makes sense, as the IIcx case features a third NuBus slot—which would provide a better fit in terms of slot configuration.

The port layout on the Centris 650 is identical to the P600/IIvi/IIvx.

I have an ethernet-less C650 board in my IIvx case, although I feel guilty about it because the IIvx is actually the family's first ever Mac (the actual machine, not just the model).

I might put the vx back in it for nostalgia's sake.

Inside the bottom of the IIcx case, there is a chrome-like coating—and sure enough, when you test it, it conducts electricity for shielding purposes. I'm a bit nervous about placing the Q700 motherboard in there without a piece of cardboard in between ...?

It was a 650 that I put in a IIci case. Easy mod and nicer case IMO.

Would be neat to have a run of 3rd party universal IIci/Quadra style case with interchangeable port cover along the bottom. I'd style it like a Quadra 700 so it could sit vertically, but I'd make it so the logo can be rotated (like the Playstation 2) so it's legible in either tower or desktop orientation. I'd even add an extra slot & cover (aligned to the IIci PDS slot, just left of the power supply) section for potential upgrades that might have additional ports.

Wouldn't say no to a smaller floppy-style opening on the front just for CF and SD cards (perhaps include an LC-style cover for people who don't use it.)

Ah, sorry, thought you'd done a 700 🙂

The IIci (probably the IIcx) also has feet positions on the side. I always had mine stood vertically when I was a kid. Made more sense on the desk.

I have Q700 triplets. One is stock, one had a 7100 tuschie graft for three slots and a G3 accelerator. The third is partway to having some PCI board or other that'll take a G4 upgrade installed. Lots of work leveling out the ribbing on the bottom where it interferes with components on the solder side of the logic board.

There are threads by me here and about for the two conversions, but I imagine they were victims of the great pixel robbery.

Printed AssGraft Plates would be the bombe.🙂

Found 'em! Sorry, first thread link won't embed in abbreviated form?

No Macs were harmed BEFORE recasing began to be discouraged and restoration became the preffered activity. :-/

Forgot to say that both my Q700 sleeper upgrades are backward compatible with IIcx/IIci cases.

You mentioned a G3+HPV upgrade for one of them - did you find a way to run the G3+HOV combo with the lid closed? I tried but the passthrough ribbon that connects the G3 to the HPV sticks out too far so I couldn't close it up!

I've got a pair of Sonnet Crescendo L2 boards with PDS VidCard mounting Kits. Also have a couple of trays full of the NewerTECH variety, some with bad cables, some with good cables, but no aluminum mounting kits and a few full working sets. So never had a problem setting anything up that I can recall?

Favorite PPC NuBus Machine is the Radius 81/110 that has plenty of available cubic in the bottom of the can for an HPV card to lay on the floor on standoffs. leaving all three NuBus slots open. Can't do that in an 8100! 🙂

Reset Switch is a 3D Print part send to me from the seller who sold me the case.

LED part is made from a 4mm Plexiglass sheet ...
