| Beige G3 266, adding ATI rage II + dvd |
Posted by: Trianon on 2026-04-03 11:48:32 Hi,
I would like to get 1280 x 1024 resolution from my beige G3 (don't need 32 bits color), but with the 2MB standard it will not work.
I can't find video memory upgrade for my beige G3 266, would it work if I add an ATI rage II PCI card (think it had 4MB) ?

I have found this, it tells a lot about the Rage line in general. They're probably talking about the PC version, but I'm sure it's fine. |

SO DIMM 4MB UPGRADE FOR XPERT LCD XCLAIM 3D ALL-IN-WONDER Fast Free Shipping
www.ebay.com
Cheapest I could find after a quick search. Shame, not long ago there was a seller in Germany selling them for much less. |
Posted by: Trianon on 2026-04-03 23:23:29 As I can get the ATI card cheaper then an 4MB memory upgrade I will go this way.
I also checked the web but the numbers are for Windows and very different from what Apple reported...
Generally I just made a calculation what can be displayed with 2MB and 4MB at 16 bits and seems
1280 can only work with the higher memory.
For me it's more about the journey than the final result 🙂 |

I would like to get 1280 x 1024 resolution from my beige G3 (don't need 32 bits color), but with the 2MB standard it will not work. If you don't need Millions of colours, Apple says the G3 does 1280x1024 at 8bit with 2MB? I'd believe that because it only needs 1.25MB of VRAM.

First thing I would do is check what video adapters you are using because some VGA adapters limit what resolutions are available. If you don't have any others, SwitchRes might let you manually select the resolution. Mac Garden seems to be broken right this moment with some downloads not appearing, but it will be here when fixed :

Posted by: Trianon on 2026-04-04 01:45:54 Thanks for that Phipli, I only found 1024x768 max on other sites.
Yes 1280x1024 with 256 colors will be more then enough as desktop for programming tasks.
So the standard 2MB will be good enough for now.
My ultimate goal is to build a KVM so I can switch keyboard, mouse and screen between all my machines ...
So I would set them all to max screen resolution by the IDs.
But I'm already blocked by the SE, Classic and 6300 with build in screen. |
Posted by: Trianon on 2026-04-07 04:39:59 Some sad news, went to picked up the machine and it did not boot anymore !
Can power up the machine with the keyboard, HD spins for a couple of seconds and then nothing...
After years not being used the owner booted it up to take some pictures to put on the bidding website,
then the morning I went he booted it once more without an issue (even made a video of it).
Anyway I still took the machine for scrap pricing as it include a very nice 17' Apple monitor,
hoping I can maybe repair it as I did for for SE ... But first I need to repair a Classic. |

Possibly spray deoxit on the connectors. They're not really that unreliable, and it sounds like the PSU is working, which is the most unreliable part.
Logic boards for them show up cheap on eBay in the worst case anyway. |
