Posted by: ironborn65 on 2026-04-02 10:22:02 I got this iMac for free.
support.apple.com
It does not boot, "BEEP BEEP" ... and without the glass ...

it could be my file server for the other macs |
Posted by: bibilit on 2026-04-02 23:56:58 Not a 100% but IIRC there is a bunch of LED for troubleshooting purposes in the Logic Board |
Posted by: ironborn65 on 2026-04-03 01:55:01 All the cables were unplugged, and the hard drive and SIMMs were removed.
I managed to get it to boot; it’s now (as expected) stuck at the “?”.
Next, I’ll install a new glass panel and an SSD.
However, as with many older iMacs, I’m having trouble creating a bootable macOS USB installer from my Apple Silicon M1.
I’ll try using an Intel Mac instead. If anyone has a solution they’ve personally tested, I’d appreciate a suggestion. |
Posted by: bibilit on 2026-04-03 04:51:44 USB stick didn't worked for me, had to use an external HD |
Posted by: ereuter on 2026-04-03 09:03:17 I just went through this with the same model. I eventually bought a copy of the DVD that came with it. |
Posted by: ironborn65 on 2026-04-03 11:41:31 @bibilit , is an ISO image just fine? |
Posted by: ereuter on 2026-04-03 12:00:07 I really don’t know. I kind of took the easy way out. Like you, I only had an Apple silicon machine available to me and wasn’t sure how to create a thumb drive. |
Posted by: olePigeon on 2026-04-03 12:29:58 @ironborn65 Plug in an ethernet cable and do Internet Recovery (Option-Shift-Command-R.) |
Posted by: ironborn65 on 2026-04-03 12:36:30 Did you try it yourself? When I attempted the same procedure on a 2011 MacBook, Internet Recovery failed with a “server not available” error. I also tried the commonly suggested workaround of changing the system date via Terminal (e.g., using date before starting the recovery), but it didn’t resolve the issue—still a dead end.
In practice, for older machines, Internet Recovery is often unreliable ... actually, it never worked for me. |
Posted by: bibilit on 2026-04-03 13:26:47 IIRC I used an ISO file |
