Which G4 to keep: Sawtooth or Quicksilver?
Posted by: novusgordo on 2016-10-25 06:48:39
I currently have two Power Mac G4 towers, a Sawtooth/400 and a Quicksilver/800. Both are in good working order, and the Sawtooth has an upgraded AGP video card. Now, I'm operating with kinda limited space, and to make room for the possibility of older/more interesting hardware coming my way, I'm thinking of selling one of my G4s. (I'd keep the other one as a G4 OS 9 box.)

I'm inclined to keep the Quicksilver, mostly because the faster system bus, etc. allows for better performance later on. But is there any reason why the Sawtooth might be better to keep?

Personally, I'd keep the Sawtooth simply because I think it looks better. πŸ™‚

If it's just for OS9 I'm not sure there's major benefits to going one way or the other, especially assuming that's a 800 single processor with only 256k L2.Β

Quicksilver personally

Tough call... I'm thinking about acquiring a Quicksilver or two to complement my Sawteeth, if nothing else then because they look different πŸ™‚

Aesthetically I'm leaning Quicksilver. I'm more wondering if there's any functionality/reliability reason to keep the Sawtooth instead.

And yes, my Quicksilver is that kinda-anemic single-800 version, but it's the same mobo as the other second-gen Quicksilvers, and the processor daughtercard can be replaced if need be.

quicksilver can do whatever the sawtooth can really, and reliability I think is right on par with all the G4 towers. Β Only the MDD seemed to be a little more prone to failures.

So far, I think the consensus is to keep the Quicksilver, which more or less jibes with my own thoughts. So I'll put the Sawtooth up on the Trading Post. Thanks for the input, everyone. πŸ™‚
