Posted by: imactheknife on 2026-03-20 04:20:22 So i grabbed a 8100/110 board on ebay and it works. I did have a pds card to put in slot to test. Not sure what to do with it now lol..no case for it. Do you put thermal paste on these? It has a thermal pad by the looks of it under the heat sink so decided to not take off. Will recap it this weekend. |

Best to leave the cooling solution be - it has a peltier effect cooler (active cooling) and I believe they're fairly delicate (and probably doesn't need maintenance at this point). No need to poke at things without reason - I mean, if it isn't overheating?
You're also not meant to run them with the ODS slot empty. I've heard people say they've had no problems, but technically it is out of spec. Apple shipped some with a special termination card for when they didn't have a PDS card.
Sounds like you're going to have to build your own case for it š |

Sounds like you're going to have to build your own case for it š Yeah i imagine finding a proper case thats not completely broken would be hard. I do have a q800 but not parting out to make an 8100 š will see what one can do! |

Posted by: killvore on 2026-03-20 13:20:23 I kept one in a IIci-case - it fit fine after some dremeling to make room for the different ports, and got an ATX extender and rearranged the cables. But I've swapped it out for a 7100 board since it fits with the PSU better š |

Ah...I stared at that listing a couple times and didn't go for the risk (and...because I too lack a case for it haha). Nice find! |

The power supply For these are big though |

Posted by: volvo242gt on 2026-03-21 14:49:42 Maybe a junk II or IIx case, with the port openings modified, would work for the 8100 board. |

Posted by: imactheknife on 2026-03-22 14:37:35 So recapping is done. Board works fine. 48 megs memory. Not sure if i will hack a case up for it. Will put it in the for sale section and see if anyone needs it. Just need money back plus caps. No charge on the recap. If no interest is then will see. Just an impulse need to recap something lol.. |
Posted by: volvo242gt on 2026-03-22 15:21:59 If you do decide to put it in a case, an ATX power supply stuffed into a II power supply's housing should work. |

What about a nicely looking modern PC case? You'd probably have to butcher around at the back side though... Definitely, NuBus and ISA/PCI slot spacing it different, so backplane needs major rework, |

Posted by: imactheknife on 2026-04-04 14:19:06 So i decided to find a home for the 8100/110 for now. Accidentally called it an 8500 in video. I have a psu coming from a friend. Might paint the case black or retro it and custom a sticker that says 8100/110 custom or desktop |

I was considering putting a Quadra 650 board in a 9600 case earlier, but don't want to have to cut the ports out under the PCI slot openings. |
