Apple AAUI - Ethernet adapter not working under 7.5.5.
Posted by: TheWhiteFalcon on 2014-10-31 18:05:14
So I updated my Quadra from 7.1 to 7.5. The Ethernet adapter (the Apple Ethernet Twisted Pair Transceiver) was recognized by the system.

Updated to 7.5.3, it stopped being recognized. Went to 7.5.5 and it isn't recognized either. When I try to switch to EtherTalk or enable the adapter it just says it can't be done, and the adapter isn't lighting up anymore either.

Is there something I'm missing here? I'm trying to network it with my Clamshell for file transfers, so it would be nice if I could get it working.

I have no idea what's wrong with it, but if you can't get it working and want a Farallon Etherwave, let me know. I've got a spare!

I may just bite the bullet and buy a SCSI CD-ROM drive if I can't get this working. The adapter did work, so I would think its a software issue.

Go into the Extensions folder and trash all the Ethernet Drivers in there.

Then take the 7.5 CD (or where ever you got it from) and copy the ethernet drivers from it's extension folder to your extension folder in the System folder.

I did a clean install of 7.5.3 again, then upgraded to 7.5.5. It now recognizes the adapter, but it didn't install Open Transport nor AppleTalk v.60 this time. I've kinda left off on trying to go further, I'll see if I can get online once I get a CD drive for it so I can load iCab or something of that sort (perhaps Internet Exploder).

I have 7.5 on Apple floppies, but 7.5.3 and 7.5.5 were downloaded from Apple's old software page, then passed over piece by piece by floppy. Not fun, 22 parts to move over that way.

Did you check Open Transport in the installer, and used the Software Switcher to set it to OT?

I did the clean install this time, which means it didn't think I needed it.

Can you not go back and install OT over an otherwise clean install?

Better yet, maybe you can find a standalone OT installer and use that?

I suppose there's a bit of a catch22, though; if you want to get online using the machine in question, you need OT, but you need to first get online to get it.

At least you have other machines with which to download OT.

Yes, you can rerun the installer and (re)add components you didn't have before.
