| 68 pin SIMM sockets found |
Posted by: MrPix on 2026-03-13 14:12:59 I have managed to source some apple original dual 68-pin SIMM sockets as used in some Quadra, Centris and LC models. These are new in box Apple original parts. Pics enclosed. I have quite a few, new old stock. A single one was used on the NeXT machines for DSP RAM, and it was also used for VRAM on the Acorn Risc PC 600 and 700.
I don't know how unobtainium these are, but I'm sure some boards may be unusable because of battery bombed sockets, and this is a hard one.

Sooo, tell me about these bad boys. I have over 100. If they're not likely to be used by people wishing to repair or recreate boards, I can find other uses for them. I have enough for a design. |
Posted by: Unknown_K on 2026-03-13 14:17:30 Are these the same as the ones on ebay for $20 plus shipping for 15 pcs?

Posted by: MrPix on 2026-03-13 14:34:25 This is hilarious. Yes, these are the same. EXACTLY the same. As in, part of the same batch of 15 boxes. I didn't get them from there, but from a friend in the DFW area.
They even have the exact same label.
He has three boxes of eight trays of 15 and one tray. I have four boxes, 32 trays, or 480 pcs.
So, I guess there's a lifetime's supply and no worries there then!

Posted by: dougg3 on 2026-03-15 21:46:10 I bought some of these on eBay a while back and can confirm that if you cut them apart into single sockets, they are exactly identical to the original VRAM socket that was mounted on my Performa/LC 550 board. |
Posted by: ArmorAlley on 2026-03-15 23:49:15 Is there a limit to the number of SIMMS that, say, a Quadra can read from, is it the total number of kilobytes limited or is it limited by size?
Could a PDS card with extra RAM slots allow the addition of more addressable RAM? |
Posted by: Byrd on 2026-03-16 01:05:01 These boxes are definitely not suitable as replacement for 68-pin ROM sockets in SE/30s are they? |

These boxes are definitely not suitable as replacement for 68-pin ROM sockets in SE/30s are they? I can take one with me next time I visit ZigZagJoe and we can test it. I don't have an SE/30 to test on.
Yes, they separate nicely, and can be cleaned up beautifully. This is how I am going to move a few of them to the NeXT and Acorn RiscPC communities, where they're also in short supply. |
Posted by: dougg3 on 2026-03-17 15:48:00 The ROM socket is 64-pin, not 68-pin, so I wouldn't expect it to be compatible for those. Even if you cleverly hacked it to remove 2 pins on each side, I'm assuming the peg locations would be wrong and it wouldn't hold the ROM SIMM in its latched position properly. |
