| What I got today at Vcf socal |
Posted by: Iusegoogle on 2026-02-14 17:39:28 Vcf SoCal was a blast and I got a Macintosh plus, cms 20mb hard drive, and peripherals. All the exhibits were very interesting and they had some great deals

Keyboard is a 128 or 512k not Plus… better deal. |

Posted by: finkmac on 2026-02-17 04:55:35 other than the case, there's nothing particularly special about the drive. just another small company buying drives and cases and slapping their label on them. you can see CMS adverts in macworlds and macusers of the time.
the case was definitely originally designed with IBM PCs in mind... but it was used by many 3rd party companies for many platforms. i've seen drives with that case advertised in Sun workstation magazines. |

That CMS case looks very much like an IBM XT case. It's an unholy marriage |

Posted by: Snial on 2026-02-18 01:59:23 Very nice! As people have noted, the keyboard is a Mac 128K/512K keyboard; the Mac Plus one had a numeric keypad. Having said that, I prefer the 65% type keyboard, I wish Apple had kept it as the standard format rather than going through the extended keyboard fetish in order to copy PCs. The reality is that they just take up more space and the extended keys don't get used much.
For example, look how aesthetic the smaller keyboard is alongside a compact Mac! The only changes for Apple's modern version is the cursor keys (I can live without function keys, don't use them much either).
PS: to preempt someone pointing me at a modern recreation of an ADB compact keyboard, I love it, except for the column of PgUp/PgDn type keys to the right of the <return> key! My touch-typing is inaccurate enough that I'm too frequently (i.e. about once per hour) hitting PgUp/PgDn and seeing the entire window or screen complete change. It's very disconcerting; it turns my ideal keyboard into the one I hate more than any other! |

Early Beige Plus came with the 128K/512K keyboard, so it may be "rare" in the sense that it's an OG keyboard that's also matched to the Plus. |
Posted by: quadra700 on 2026-03-19 22:42:07 Hey! I was at VCF SoCal too, I've gone every year since they started doing it (yes, all 3 years)
I scored a Macintosh iifx which is pretty much the last 68k mac I wanted, though its battery bombed which I knew going in. Happy with what I paid for it though and I'm going to try my hand at trace repair.
I actually wanted to be an exhibitor this year but my friend who was going to do it with me backed out and I dont really want to do it alone. Maybe next year, I hope. |
