Performa 6400 upgrades
Posted by: bibilit on 2026-01-28 02:16:43
Hi, i have not worked on one of these for a long time, i have been looking and seeking through the forum but would like to have some experts here.

I have collected a nice 6400 and except for the missing HD (not a big deal), the unit is complete and has already some nice upgrades (128 Mb of Ram, A Sonnet G3 and a Matrox Millenium II Video card)

i have found in my bin of parts a PCI USB card apparently fully compatible (opti Firelink chip) is this ok ?

Also, an Asante Fast ethernet card that should work as well without issue.

Of course, having just two PCI slots, all those cards won't be available at the same time.

The others questions are :

in order to get all the power from the G3, should i modify the Logic Board from 40Mhz to 50 with a new crystal oscillator and a resistor change ?

Last the but not least, i think i can have the TAM chime also ?

Thanks

well bibilt this thread suggests that it is plausible but there are some people that say 50mhz is unstable and they have to settle for just 47mhz or so instead. I don't have anything more to add to your post atm btw

Thanks my friend, hard drive is not an issue, I have got a lot of IDE drives, even one brand new if required.
