Radius Precision Color 8X-J 7 inch ROM Image
Posted by: samovog on 2026-01-22 09:48:13
Dear colleagues,

Does anyone have a ROM Dump from a Radius PC 8X-J 7 inch VGA card? I found a VER 2.0 here, but when i flashed it over my 1.6 rom there is no image on the screen. As i made a backup before flashing with the TL-866 it also got corrupted somehow (if i flash it back to the ROM chip there is also no image on the screen). The card worked normally before flashing.

I use a 5V ROM chip, but i also tested with a 3V rom chip. Its the same...

Here is the card:

Any help is much appreciated.

Got a copy of the dump you did of your card?
Are you sure the type of chip you used is the same pinout of the original chip? Flash chips have different pinouts from the common one time programmable 27C series chips that are often found on those cards.

Those are the two Precision Color 8XJ ROMs I've got.

It sounds like they flashed it over the image on their original chip, which of course won’t work if it’s one time programmable, and probably destroyed it.

That's what I was thinking. And the replacement chip then was a 29/39-series flash chip with a different pinout that also won't work.
I've been there... 😅
Either way, @samovog if you let us know what you did exactly we'll figure something out. I see you're located in Slovenia, so it shouldn't be too expensive to send over a pre-flashed chip if needed. I think I should even have any chip in stock that could possibly on your card.

Wow, you guys rule. To clarify on the chips used:
- the original chip is: Atmel AT27C256R - i can read this one but not program it with the TL-866
- the "new" chip i used (this one i can read and program) is: AMD AM29F010

No idea on the pinout.

I just orderd 10 pcs AT27C256R chips and will program them once they arrive with Bolles roms.

AM29F010 did not work because its pinout is different from the AT27C256.
Any 32K x 8 ROM chip will work, as long as it meets or exceeds the original's speed rating and has the same pinout. Doesn't have to be an OTP ROM

I can confirm, that flashing the ROM image to the correct tom (AT27C256R) fixed the card. Thank you for your help.
