| Starting on a Mac SE (SE/30 modded) journey. |
Posted by: sunvalleylaw on 2026-01-07 15:13:09 Just getting into the vintage scene, after using Macs basically my whole life, and the life of that line too. Starting in 1984. Got this machine to start with. Should arrive in a week or so. I had an SE in 1988 I used for my legal work at that time, and this one was not too expensive, and looked up and running enough for me to learn and mod from a starting place. would like to add something akin to the old ScuzzyGraph II SCSI mods that allowed the machine to drive a color display. Learned about that watching a video interview of Rand Miller and how they developed Myst. Would use it for displaying family photos, messing around with old games, etc. And for grins. Just developing my knowledge and ideas now. If anyone has any ideas of directions to pursue, chime in. 🙂

May learn from this one and take on a restore/mod project of a proper SE/30 down the road if I find a good candidate some day. 🙂 |
Posted by: GreenBar0n on 2026-01-07 15:21:55 I saw that one for sale yesterday, you got the hardest to find part with an old SE/30, a working/restored logic board 👍. That makes up for the case not matching, imo. Great upgrades too for the floppy and HDD.
Congrats! |

Congrats! Thanks! I thought it would be less frustrating to start with some of the work already done! |
Posted by: sunvalleylaw on 2026-01-12 16:39:39 Should get here Thursday! Meanwhile, I am having fun on the other later 90s unit. |
Posted by: sunvalleylaw on 2026-01-15 16:54:04 OK, here it is! I have been excited about this. Figured out from the UPS store today.
First a little unboxing. It was packed very well, in my opinion. Hooked everything up. The newer keyboard that doesn’t have the rainbow apple seems to work better as the Q key seems to be stuck on the one with the Apple. I’m going to see if I can clean that one up and take care of some of the yellow and get it working again.

And here is the first start up and a little brief exploration. I had to stop after firing it up to change out the keyboard because as I said, the one with the rainbow apple on it wasn’t working properly. The other one works just fine though! And this thing seem super fast for what it has on it right now.
I did check in with the seller and the PSU has not been recapped so I will either do that or install a different one. And then my next plan is to secure one of the 30Video HC greyscale kits or equivalent and hook up an external monitor. After messing around on this old monochrome monitor, I just can’t bring myself to put the LCD color screen in instead.I’m also going to see how I can figure out to add some (limited) Internet. |
Posted by: sunvalleylaw on 2026-01-19 15:06:42 Ok, starting my list for further upgrades:
1) Replace or recap/restore power supply. Probably replace. Reading threads for the best options there.
2) figure out how to fit an accelerator card, ethernet, AND grey scale/video card in there.
3) source the best options at this point. For the grey scale/external video options, looking at zigzagjoe's and belle's as options, and that largely depends who decides to make some more.
4) Do said installs!
5) I am sourcing a new faceplate to make the machine match what it is.
6)start sourcing parts for my own build of a second machine, staring with a new logic board. |
Posted by: Fred1212 on 2026-01-20 15:20:59 Enjoy. SE/30's are popular for a reason and great retro computers |
Posted by: ESM-NL on 2026-01-22 04:15:18 Nice machine. Have fun with it. Interesting that there is no internal floppy drive and both floppy drive ports have that cover plate. |
Posted by: Fred1212 on 2026-01-23 17:45:17 Nice to get a floppy EMU with it as well |
Posted by: sunvalleylaw on 2026-01-23 20:24:45 Yeah! |
