Definition of battery bombed?
Posted by: mst3k on 2026-01-07 09:21:57
Just picked this SE/30 up for a song. Turns out the song was 'The End of the World As We Know It'.

The loose item that was rolling around inside the SE/30 when I picked it up was the battery, freed from it's home by it's companion, corrosion.
One of the capacitors is so gone, it resembles a stalagmite.
Not sure what's next.
Time for one of the Bolle reloaded logic boards?
Or is there someone that can actually fix this?

The good news is the case, frame, disk drive, CRT and analog board are all fine.

it is battery bombed

probably would be a reloaded candidate, but try and clean it off first

agreed, I've also seen a Macintosh Classic logic board that got that bad, but it was a parts machine for a Classic whose tube I necked, so I just relegated it to ewaste after neutralizing the battery acid

not worth fixing, that one looks really bad. reloaded is the way to go for that

Looks familiar, except for brand of battery. This was from September-October 2012...

Is there a US source for the ATTiny85 on it's own PCB? Looking for the RTC/crystal replacement for a SE/30.
I've found them in the UK but not here.
Thanks

Oof. That's painful to see! Definitely reloaded or a board from max is the way to go.

I've got the board cleaned up and the damage is extensive.
The subtler damage to the board itself is even more troublesome with broken traces and corroded vias leading the way.
Although there's probably some talented folks here that could save this board, I'm not one of them.

I've always wanted to try my hand at the reloaded option, and now I've got an excuse.

Hopefully some of the main chips didn't get destroyed or lose too many legs.

Funny you should say that...

I just pulled the 68030 and seven of the pins nearest the battery were completely eaten by the corrosion...
Because of the lip on this 68030 I couldn't see they were gone until I pulled it.

sigh...

Yup, it's a victim there. Currently have a Classic board in my bin of boards like that (and if anyone wants the parts I'll gladly sell it).

Yikes, looks like Dresden after the RAF worked it over in WWII! I wonder if I have any of that brand in one of my machines? I've mostly pulled 'em all and use "new" blue ones from what's probably too long ago to trust.

Found out the battery in my Radius 81/110 leaked at some point in the last couple of years. Doesn't appear to have exploded, though I can't get to it for another year or so, in week nine of rotator cuff surgery and that thing is well and truly buried.🙄

edit: started a new thread about that project in the PPC forum for a long term repair project rather than muddy this one:
Radius 81/100: yet another battery acid victim

@Trash80toHP_Mini I can add this destroyed PM 7100 to the RAF over Germany saga. A german battery was inside "Sonnenschein" (sunshine) looks like as corrosive as the good old maxell ones. Received another PM 7100 with the same battery - not yet leaking but see yourself.
