| Macintosh IIcx + PowerCD 600e = are they compatible? |
Hello!
I want to get a CD-Rom for my Macintosh IIcx and I have my eyes on a PowerCD 600e!
But according to its manual it says that it says the following:
"Your AppleCD 600e quad-speed CD-ROM player works with the MacintoshIIci computer and all later Macintosh and PowerBook models that have a68030 or higher processor with a clock speed of 25 megahertz or higher. Yoursystem software must be version 7.1 or later."
Does this mean that it wont work with my Macintosh IIcx at all or that it will be slower than 4x speed?

I don’t quite see how they could stop you using it on a IIcx - it seems like more of a recommendation.

It’ll work fine, I have a cd 600e I use on a verity of old macs, including an SE, II, IIcx, even been used with a plus.

Just out of curiosity do you get less than 4x speed on your older macs or does it still get 4x?
I would assume you get at least 1x on all different Macs, what's your experience?

I was always just happy to have the 600e work without needing a driver for it, so I never paid any attention to the speed (my first CD drive was an NEC back in the day and required one). How would I check the speed - would one of the hardware tests verify that?

I would assume you get at least 1x on all different Macs, what's your experience? Can’t say I’ve ever tested it. It’ll be limited by its weakest link.. I think the scsi controller on all those systems would be faster than the speed of the 600e, but other things could have slowed it down.
I suspect the reason it’s minimum spec is the IIci is other related functionality, like the version of quicktime or something.
