Palm IIIe or Palm IIIx?

Posted by: bibilit on 2016-10-15 01:44:02
Not really, Palm III based, you are right, but:

Case is blue, not grey or black.

Casing is longer.

Battery is a rechargeable pack, cradle is different.

The power button color makes me think it's an IBM WorkPad, but I've never seen one with silver buttons like that. Much less a Palm III-form factor one with a rechargeable battery. Huh. I'm pretty stumped on this one.

Not IBM (was Black in color) sorry....

Another awkward data, production date is February 2003.... (the Palm III was probably not sold anymore by then)

Is running palm Os V 3.5.2

Not missing any feature the Palm III had, but has an additional one...

Any other idea ??

Barcode scanner. Symbol SPT1550?

Posted by: Carboy7 on 2016-10-15 05:55:38
I only know that's a Palm because I happen to own one myself. an M100. πŸ˜›

And the hidden feature(i'm guessing) is either infrared, or brightness setting.

Have you been scanning everything with a barcode you see with it just for laughs? I spent about an hour doing that when I saved a USB barcode reader from the garbage a few months ago. (The USB one acts like a keyboard, so all you need to do is find a web UPC code database and scan away. It can be sort of amusing discovering things like the same UPC code is used on different package variations of the product... sometimes radically different.)

I'm up to my eyeballs in iPhone barcode scanner peripherals. Fun stuff. And every time I clean my house, I find yet another damn Bluetooth one.

YesΒ  πŸ™‚ Β  πŸ™‚

I have been collecting Palm devices for a while, should have almost the entire range, always known this kind of product was available, never seen one for real.

I think, most of the time those are returned to supplier, or discarded.

This was advertised simply as Palm, and free...

That's fun stuff πŸ™‚ You could do stickers with barcodes for each machine, with specs and all...Β

Was doing that with QRcodes :

PS: The guy didn't answered yet for the PB100, he has up to the 18th... We'll see.

No problem mate,

Concerning barcodes, yes can be fun also, don't know if the Symbol can work as a stand alone device or should be connected to a terminal...

Nice PDA! The original Newton can't do anything, apart from typos that is.

Congrats!

Isn't that what Apple Stores used for their POS devices until they replaced them with modified iPhones?

Posted by: novusgordo on 2016-10-16 06:37:36
I work in retail and I still emit a puerile laugh when ever I see the acronym PoS ("point of sale" vs. "piece of ****"), especially because it applies so well in both senses to our PoS hardware!

Turns out my BlackBerry could read bar codes in addition to QR codes. Much scanning ensued.

I know how you feel Novus, the old beat-up IBM SurePOS units I suffered with at Kmart really fit that alternative definition.

My local Kmart still uses those, and they're almost always malfunctioning in one way or another.

Are they still using DOS or something? Those things were considered outdated 13 years ago!
