| SD Card Icons for System 7 |
Posted by: redphantom on 2025-12-11 17:00:13 Hey Folks!
I've noticed a lot of YouTubers and others have changed their main drive name to "Macintosh SD." I've done the same! To that end I thought it was time to make a SD card icon for System 7.
Disclaimer: I am not an artist. I took some inspiration from some other icons and some AI generations to try and make these.
I made a black and a blue version using Icongrapher 2.4 on MacOS 9.2.2. They contain versions from 32-bit down to 1-bit. Happy to provide the files on request if someone wants to change them.

They are free to use, remix, and modify. Maybe you'll even make a better version than this, or maybe someone will do a cool one for System 8. Below are the previews and links: |

Posted by: finkmac on 2025-12-11 18:07:04 yeah but AI models might not know that |

View attachment 93213 It is indeed....but had to give it a little flair |

I have made nothing like this myself, but I will observe that to fit in with the Sys6/7 era stylistically, they should probably be mostly black and white, with only small amounts of highlight colour. I’m still not sure (after 30 years!) whether I completely agree with that level of minimalism, but that’s how they did it then. |
Posted by: redphantom on 2025-12-12 15:56:25 Boy do I have some good news for you!
When you made an icon back in the day, you also had to make its alternative color versions so as you scaled down colors, for say like a game at 16 Colors or Black and White there would still be an icon.
So on both the black and the blue I went with this for the Black and White Version:

I think it looks nice, BUT......there if we want to be accurate for System 6, then really it should be an outline of the device, just like how the Floppy is a wire frame. So that being said, I just made this real fast for any purists out there:

See the attached file below for a Black version of the card at 256 colors, and the wire frame System 6 version at Black and White.
Enjoy! |

Really working hard to make sure people enjoy their hobby aren't we. Hope you're enjoying yourself. If you ever make the grave mistake of using an applied statistical model for anything serious I will flame you in the face |
Posted by: Trekintosh on 2026-01-25 10:42:48 I suppose spite is as good enough a reason to begin an artistic endeavor as any. Probably the only good thing clankers have accomplished recently is driving actual artists to make more art. @MacJunky any chance at a download for the color versions? |

Posted by: MacJunky on 2026-02-02 16:29:22 I don't know the rules about these sorts of things, so as long as it doesn't step on anyone's toes or bring lawyers knocking I'm not bothered.
Archive made with dropstuff 3.5.2 so hopefully it has some sort of compatibility? I'm not very well versed in pre-v5 Stuffit. I'm not any sort of icon guy either and I don't know how they are best packed/made/etc. Just clicked some pixels in ResEdit, as you saw above.
Here I have them split apart with resource ID -16455 so they show up properly in the Finder. I've found pasting from the Get Info box to not properly copy the smaller sizes... but that was also on a machine which was having issues displaying icons in the first place without constant desktop rebuilds, and I also don't know squat about how icons are displayed. The machine I split them apart and packaged on seems better about that, but I also didn't test that particular function specifically.... So, it is what it is. Hopefully I don't have any silly little errors and need a v1.1. 😛 |
