Seeking advice on bombed SE/30
Posted by: Anonymous on 2025-12-03 11:03:02
Heyo!
As per usual, I got an SE/30, the battery has leaked and rusted everywhere. Any expert opinions on saving the board, getting a recreation board, reusing the chips, etc? Thanks!

I wouldn’t bother trying to save the board, it’s multilayer and the traces running under it will almost certainly have been damaged. Doing a reloaded board is fairly easy.. time consuming and annoying at times (some parts are a PITA to remove). You’ll want to at the very least get replacements for the chips that show corrosion. As best I can remember they’re all still available today and cheap as.. uh.. chips.. you can still get some NOS clock chips too. I can’t quite tell if the ROM slot is intact or not, and that can be a problem as they’re unobtanium now.

I think if you look at the reloaded project there’s a google sheets page that has links for the parts that you’ll need to get.

Oh and I’d also suggest replacing UE8, UF8, and UG8 as they often fail and again pretty damn cheap

Awesome! Thanks. If I wanted to get a Synchr030, could I leave out the ram slots entirely?

If that board doesn't require the slots to be populated, I don't see why they would need to be there.. other than probably would be good to have them available for diagnostics before you start adding on external components.

Yes. The cards are currently sold out, but a Rev B run is in progress.

Oof. That's some gore. I once dealt with an SE/30 that was similar. To echo what Durosity said, dealing with the traces beneath the surface would be near impossible. Best of luck with your project!
