Hi, can’t find how many Apple IIe were made in total, one source says an average figure of 800 000 units.
But the IIe was made from 1983 to 1993, and the Plus is close to 400 000 units (in 4 years only) so probably the IIe should have higher numbers.

Hi, no, seems to be Worldwide.
The GS was sold in Europe, indeed was sold in France but being sold at the same period as was sold the Macintosh, the IIGs was not mainstream.
The IIGs was considered the end of a line in France, while the Macintosh was the seen as the future, and not advertised the same way.

IIRC, the IIGS was sold from 1986 right through 1993 (although production stopped in 1992), and it used a highly optimized production line, so was able to crank out a lot of units. The IIc used the same style of production, but only ran from 1984 to 1988 -- and was competing directly against both the IIe and the Macintosh (as well as the IIgs for two years) -- so while it was cheaper to make and buy, it had a more limited market.
I know in the education market, the big sellers were the II Plus, the IIe and the IIgs, before things went crazy in the Mac years. I'm pretty sure it's the education market that drove the numbers for the Plus and GS, and the e just hit that sweet spot, as production optimized and ramped up, education AND home computing opened up, global markets became available, all at the same time -- AND the e could run all the software that ran on the earlier Apple computers. Plus, it had stability, having a product run of 10 years. The Plus essentially paved the way and provided funding for producing the e -- the e was a marketing and production continuation of the Plus. | Posted by: bibilit on 2025-10-07 00:09:23

If the IIc Plus sold 200,000 units then where are they all? With how rare they are, it doesn't seem right to me that they sold anywhere close to half as many units as the original IIc. | Posted by: bibilit on 2025-10-07 08:20:55
I agree, the IIc Plus was only sold in the US, not abroad, so probably the right amount is somewhere around 100 000 units sold.
Also, concerning the Apple II Plus, another source says only 380 000 were made, but maybe the Europlus and rare Japanese J-Plus (less than 2000 were made) are not included in the amount. | | 1 |
