| G4 Cube replacement DVD drive help |
Posted by: Top Jimmy on 2025-09-01 12:54:33 I have a G4 Cube with a faulty DVD drive.
I've see the walkthrough thread:

So I purchased a (actually 2) UJ-85J-C from Ebay. I don't have the proper adapter, just the original one from the bad drive (board sticks out the the side).
When I power up, I just get the flashing folder icon. if I remove the DVD drive and leave the HD, it boots fine. The DVD drive does inject an audio CD and spins up.
what am I missing?
Also, does this UJ-85J-C only have a soft eject? I cannot fine a physical eject button....and a CD is stuck in it. |

Posted by: Scorpio_ny on 2025-09-03 08:43:50 Hi! I am the author of that thread. It could be that there is an IDE conflict of some sort. Have you tried disconnecting the hard drive and just leaving the DVD drive connected? If the drive comes up, restart the Mac and hold down the mouse button while booting up to eject the disk. Also, are you using the original IDE cable? If you substituted with a different IDE cable, it may be wired correctly for cable select. |
Posted by: Top Jimmy on 2025-09-03 09:56:34 thank you, I got it working using a spinning HDD. it did not like my SSDs or CF/HD adapters. would lock on boot. with an old spinning mechanical HDD it boots and the replacement DVD seems to work great!
thanks for the reply. |
