| Question regarding Mac Portables with rebuilt battery |
Posted by: applesos on 2025-08-11 17:02:20 Hi! I'm not sure if this has been discussed elsewhere but I have a Portable sporting the modernized lithium ion battery. I know the Portable has some parasitic drain since it doesn't truly turn off and wanted to maximize the service life of its new battery. Do we have any documentation on whether it's better to let it drain when not in use or just to leave it plugged in when idle? |

modernized lithium ion battery? what are you talking about One of the common retrofits in Portables is replacing the godawful and usually long-dead lead acid battery with either a purpose-built Li-Ion battery if you want to preserve its portability as a luggable, or a bank of capacitors if you just plan to operate it while plugged into a wall. |
Posted by: finkmac on 2025-08-11 17:16:11 sure, but which battery is that? do you have a link? |
Posted by: applesos on 2025-08-11 17:20:15 It was purchased from somebody else on the forum, pretty sure the battery rebuilds for these are custom assembled. Really more a question dependent on the battery chemistry than the battery itself. |
Posted by: finkmac on 2025-08-11 17:30:18 why so vague?
who sold it to you, what does it look like? |
Posted by: applesos on 2025-08-11 17:39:57 Not sure how appearance has an impact. I got it from @kastegir last summer. |
Posted by: finkmac on 2025-08-11 17:47:01 well, i'm questioning if it's actually "lithium ion".
a li-on battery would require custom circuitry to use on a macintosh portable... and i've never heard of a project like that.
if there is, I really want to know more
are you sure you're not referring to a LiFePO4 battery? |
Posted by: applesos on 2025-08-11 17:53:28 Fair. It's almost certainly a LiFePO4 then since no changes were made to the board to permit charging. |
