Unfortunately, (I assume due to the missing side panel), the S900 arrived with the CPU bouncing around. After cleaning up the gross case, I plugged it in and the fans and hard drive spun up, but no chime/video.
Here's what I've tried:
-New PRAM
-CUDA reset
-Remove all memory except two sticks/reseat
-Remove all PCI cards except for the Twin Turbo video, reseat
-Disconnect floppy/hard drive
-Reseat CPU a few times
-Carefully inspect board for any damage (none seen)
Any other suggestions? | Posted by: Byrd on 2025-07-09 22:53:15 That's not a great thing to find when delivered 🙁
A working CPU will result in a chime, I'd inspect the CPU connector very slowly for any damage/pins dislodged. The CPUs cards are known to sag in tower Macs, and over a long time make poor connection (worse if dislodged due to shipping abuse!), perhaps positioning the CPU daughter card as a very slight angle might also result in some life. | Posted by: Franklinstein on 2025-07-10 14:25:01 Sometimes it's not obvious when a discrete component gets knocked loose or off. Look for anything, especially capacitors, that may not sit properly or some pads that look like something used to be there.
I think the power supplies on those are custom but you can hack an ATX power supply into one if necessary. There are guides.
Also, make sure the speaker's plugged in and let it sit for a few minutes after power up to see if it eventually sends anything to the screen. Put a floppy disk into the drive and if it gets spat out, the computer's trying to boot but something's clearly not working properly. | Posted by: legodude on 2025-07-13 11:57:13 Thanks for the hints.
Agree re: the components, I did find a tiny decoupling cap that is displaced
I also have a Power Center 150 - are the CPUs cross compatible? | | 1 |
