Games The Need To Be Booted Off Disk?
Posted by: Tempest on 2025-05-22 13:09:47
I've been filling up the hard drive on my Mac SE with various games found on the Garden, but I've noticed that there are a few that will only run if booted off the original disk. I assume this is because they either use a special modified System or they're incompatible with System 6.0.8 which I'm running. Is there a list of games that cannot be copied and run off a hard drive? Sometimes it's mentioned in the game description on the page, but usually not.

There's very few that require the original boot disk, but as I mentioned in the other thread, Dark Castle has very specific requirements, and if you mess with the memory address space, you can prevent it from running.

Feel free to update https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1wg45xflCn8MAPvE0H4un7OmbavRNW5qlSHbeZg39Q9A/ though if you find games that won't work with 6.0.8; the more info we can collect, the better.

Is 6.0.8 the best System to use or should I be using something earlier like 3, 4, or 4?

Depends on the game; Dark Castle comes with its own system, and that's the one to use (as listed in the other thread) - IIRC, Beyond Dark Castle is happy with 6.0.8. Other games will have other "Best Systems" but I've been surprised at how many older games will run in the Classic environment under 10.4.11, or under 9.2.2 on a G4. It's only the ones that ventured outside the Macintosh Toolbox that really got in trouble, because they often used shortcuts/hacks that were tied to specific OS versions or hardware.
