| Q840av gets a make over |
Posted by: SophieRose on 2025-05-03 02:25:02 My Quadra840av has been through a transformation complete with picoPSU.

Posted by: croissantking on 2025-05-03 03:08:48 I like it! And the good thing is that you don’t need to deal with Quadra 8x0 case plastics |
Posted by: David Cook on 2025-05-03 08:12:47 This is very interesting.
A IIci case? What tool did you use to remove open up the back ports?
Does the Quadra 840AV identify itself correctly? Despite not having the little loop of wire on the LED connector to indicate that it is in a tower case? |

I simply cut a big hole across the ports with a cutting disk, the id is normal 840av as I’ve put a jumper on the led connector 😀🍎 |
Posted by: luRaichu on 2025-05-03 09:08:33 I don't like when people leave big empty holes in cases... You've got those NuBus slots and power supply orfices wide open. Grinds my gears!
Are you going to spray paint your keyboard, mouse, and monitor silver next? |

Are you going to spray paint your keyboard, mouse, and monitor silver next? Well I guess each to their own and all that and no, no I’m not. |
Posted by: luRaichu on 2025-05-03 09:21:08 Still is an interesting hack nonetheless |

Ahh! The simplest solutions are the best. Cool build. |
Posted by: frontein1 on 2025-05-03 11:01:50 I think this is pretty darn cool, in my opinion. And you're keeping a Q840AV alive, which by itself is just awesome! |
Posted by: SophieRose on 2025-05-03 11:08:52 Thanks, and it’s getting used now rather than being a broken motherboard in a draw. It’s my 68k POV raytracing machine atm 🤓 |

being a broken motherboard in a draw.
You said that in a southern U.S. accent. 😀 |
Posted by: Durosity on 2025-05-03 13:01:57 Very cool! |
Posted by: Unknown_K on 2025-05-03 14:30:36 Are you going to figure out a way to mount the floppy drive? |
Posted by: SophieRose on 2025-05-03 15:07:46 @David Cook oh yes lol drawer.. my brain 🤪
@Unknown_K I thought about it but I really don't use floppies anymore tbh. |
Posted by: croissantking on 2025-05-03 15:16:47 This is your second 840av in a IIci case, right? Cause you had one at the meetup. |

This is your second 840av in a IIci case, right? Cause you had one at the meetup. It’s the same one, been out of sorts to do anything macintosh for a while mainly due to life, moving house etc, and giving this a spruce up with the picopsu has helped get my mojo back. |
Posted by: cheesestraws on 2025-05-03 15:44:15 one of the best cases - good choice |
Posted by: croissantking on 2025-05-03 15:45:42
one of the best cases - good choice Great for bench testing, say, a problematic graphics card. 😉 |
Posted by: eharmon on 2025-05-03 15:49:05 For some reason it never occurred to me a pico PSU can avoid the power supply connector compatibility issues between boards and cases. Obvious in hindsight, and handy! |
Posted by: Byrd on 2025-05-03 15:57:35 Tough crowd when you don't have a 840AV case ... looks fine to me enjoy what is the nicest 68K made. |
