Booting Lisa 2 from ProFile – Checking for LisaOS Partition?
Posted by: plb007 on 2025-04-24 09:30:15
Hi everyone,

I’ve got a Lisa 2 — the version with the built-in parallel DB25 port (so no internal Widget). It boots up fine from an external ProFile hard drive, but it always goes straight into MacWorks.

I’m trying to figure out a few things:

  • Is there a way to check if there’s a Lisa OS partition hidden on the ProFile?
  • MacWorks reports the drive as 5MB, but I’m wondering if it might actually be a 10MB ProFile, with the other 5MB possibly used by a Lisa OS install.
  • If Lisa OS is installed, is there any way to choose which OS boots at startup?
Also, with floppies, I’ve been booting from a MacWorks startup disk first, then inserting the actual MacWorks disk. But with the ProFile, how does the startup process work? Is there any built-in way to switch or select an alternate system if one exists?

Any tips would be really appreciated!

Highly unlikely the drive is partitioned.
If you need confirmation that your Profile is 5mb open it up and check the label on the HD.

A 10 MB Profile is rare. So probably it is a 5MB.
I have a partioned Profile emulator. (https://vintagemicros.com/catalog/lisa-xprofile-p-307.html)
This one boots in Lisa OS if I don’t use the MacWorks floppy and only boots in MacWorks if I boot from floppy.

Does she boot MacWorks or MacWorks+?
MacWorks+ normally formats the whole disk as HFS drive and there is no Lisa partition.
