6100 PSU issues?
Posted by: CelGen on 2016-09-18 19:00:54
Anyone know if there are known issues with the power supplies in the Power Macintosh 6100?

I've negelected to ever see if my 6100 actually worked so I pulled it out, put in a fresh battery, stripped it to a minimal config and pushed the power button. I got a blink of the power light and a split second of the drive spinning up before all of the voltage rails dropped dead. I pulled the PSU and tried with an external load and indeed the PSU was the problem. I opened it up and it had some dust but it wasn't caked nor did it appear to have anything roasted, plus the main fuse was intact. I have no way to verify is the crowbar circuit is engaging or not. Only thing else I noticed was that there are only three capacitors for the voltage rails. That seems pretty small for a computer power supply.

Recapping might fix it, but I'm not certain.

if it pulses up and shuts down that sounds to me like one of the rails are low, or shorted and the power supply controller is latching into protection. Might want to ohm your rails to ground and make sure one of them isnt shorted before shotgunning capacitors.

Recapping brought back the PSU. Under load +5, +12 and -12 are all within tolerances.  They gave off that peculiar fish smell dead caps give off but otherwise they looked good and read fine during ESR tests.
