Color Classic chime/grayscreen/no pointer after installing MacEffects Thunder Card
Posted by: bwicklund on 2025-02-27 16:18:10
I have a Color Classic, it has been working great for a couple years (recapped logic and analog board). It’s as maxed out as it can be: 10MB of RAM, Max VRAM (added 256k) and I added a 68882 FPU as well.

Today I installed a MacEffects Thunder card with 33Mhz 68030 and 16Mhz FPU. I get initial chime on boot, but then it just hangs on gray screen.

Any ideas? Does it not like 2 FPUs for some reason. The CC should not need drivers and it doesn’t get far enough to matter.

Have you tried removing the other FPU?

Yes, you need to remove the additional FPU. Some accelerators (like my Booster cards) will ignore any other FPU as they decode the FPU Select signals on-card, but the thunder does not, it uses the same FPU_SEL line as the other FPU would be.

That was it. It did not like the two 68882s, seems like an easy requirement to state.

What is odd, at least to me, is that when I removed the FPU on the card and left the 68882 on the logic board the system was extremely unstable. Error -11 at random moments. Switching that and leaving the 68882 on the card and removing the one on the logic board seemed to cure things.

After an hour of playing SimCity the system hard froze and now my blueSCSI is a corrupted volume. Not sure if that is related to the accelerator or not, it was able to do two passes with speedometer v4 in this configuration.
