Anyone ever try using OpenTransport on a Mac II?
Posted by: reodraca on 2025-02-26 16:21:33
As I understand it, OT requires a 68030. It seems a shame that a fully loaded Mac II with a 68851 and 20 MB of RAM would fall short of the requirements. I've always found MacTCP to be a hassle to set up, and I enjoy the automatic DHCP OT provides.

Anyone here ever get OT to work on a 68020?

The most you can try is loading one of the earlier versions, like 1.1. Install it on another computer then copy it over and see what it does.

Would this image help clear things up?

OT 1.1.1 should work fine.

Honestly, I think A stock Mac II would be one hell of an OS 6 machine. I run 7.1 on my IIfx units.

^I dual boot mine. 7.5 for System 7 activities, and 6.0.8 for System 6 activities. Installed the Desktop Manager INIT in the System 6 system folder, so it uses the System 7 style Desktop DB and DF files, instead of adding the older Desktop file.

Perhaps an 030 or 040 accelerator?

DISCUSSION
  • What's new in Open Transport 1.1.1 - general * Open Transport can now be used on the Performa and Power Macintosh 52xx, 53xx, 62xx and 63xx product lines. When you install OT 1.1.1 on a 52xx, 53xx, 62xx and 63xx computer, you may get a dialog box indicating a hardware issue was detected. If this alert is displayed, Open Transport cannot be installed or loaded until the Cache/ROM DIMM is replaced. The required repairs are covered under the Apple repair extension program. Please contact an Apple-authorized service provider to have your computer repaired. (Your computer will continue to run classic networking until it is repaired.)* When running System 7.5.3 on a 68020 computer that has been upgraded using a 68040 accelerator card, Open Transport will now run correctly.* Memory management is improved. On PowerPC-based computers, memory is no longer fragmented. On 68030 or 68040 computers that have turned on the "Load only when needed" option, memory will not unfragment for 2 minutes after a TCP application completes.
