How big a lift would it be to implement support for user-space AppleTalk in Netatalk?
I'm thinking, I suppose, of a modular system along the lines of what TashRouter does, with modules for EtherTalk over tap, EtherTalk over macvtap, LocalTalk over LToUDP, LocalTalk over TashTalk, and any other implementations anyone would care to make.
I'm thrilled to see Netatalk 4.0 reintroduce AppleTalk support and I laud and appreciate the work of @slipperygrey, @NJRoadfan, et al, and I know well the impulse to eyeroll when people say "hey that's great but could you do XYZ" about my projects. It's just that I'm worried about the constant threat of AppleTalk kernel support getting carelessly broken or even discarded, and my thoughts turn to a contingency plan. | Posted by: robin-fo on 2024-12-12 05:12:47 It‘s possible. I‘ve done it. 😃
You just have to navigate around the fork()s… | Posted by: slipperygrey on 2024-12-13 00:33:53 It’s definitely concerning that Red Hat, FreeBSD and OpenBSD all made the explicit decision to remove old network stacks. From their perspective I understand the rationale (removing potential attack vectors) but it’s sad nonetheless.
@robin-fo you're our only hope! 💪 | | 1 |
