I'm trying to see if I can get the Quantum ProDrive 40S from my SE/30 working again. Its making this periodic buzzing sound - here is a video with the lid off:
I found this reddit post where someone had a similar complaint about this drive:
I see lots of videos/tips on fixing the Quantum ProDrive ELS and LPS but not this older 40S model. Seems an 80S also existed. Any tips on what might be happening based on the behavior in the video? NOTE: for anyone else who comes across this thread, read https://68kmla.org/bb/index.php?thr...-height-drive-with-a-stuck-parked-head.48725/ first on how to take the lid off. Don't remove the screw under the sticker - use an 8mm socket to only remove the nut. Annoyingly, I searched forum for "40S" and didn't see this post - but it comes up if you search for "40 S" with a space.
Well I got the drive working long enough to copy the data onto a BlueSCSI v2 in initiator mode!
With the lid off, I decided to put the drive on its side (oriented so the magnets were "up") and moved the head around with my finger - and it booted on my SE/30 ! I'd messed around with the drive for a long time flat on my table surface and getting nowhere, but it woke up when I oriented it on its side like that.
I then unplugged the SCSI cable from SE/30 without powering it off, plugged SCSI ribbon cable into a BlueSCSI v2 I already had setup in initiator mode, and it copied the 42MB hard drive in approximately a minute.
Then I was able to boot the image off the BlueSCSI v2 !
Somewhere in Adrian's video about using blue scsi he mentioned its possible to hot swap, why I decided to just move the scsi cable from SE/30 to the BlueSCSI v2 once it booted - wasn't sure if I'd have another chance: | Posted by: GreenBar0n on 2024-11-23 15:31:38
Nicely done! Saw that feature and was wondering how to set the jumpers in order to scavenge data from an old drive. That video helped.
