Plus 800k FDD magic smoke???
Posted by: lostkerbal on 2024-10-21 10:02:52
I was recently working on fixing up my Mac Plus (new MoBo, RAM, etc.), and I was testing it with the case off and the FDD outside of the case, just sitting on top of its mount; it'd had problems ejecting and it was just easier for me to be able to push the manual eject. It read a disk perfectly well a couple times, but after a boot attempt, the drive started producing magic smoke, then stopped working. I'm unsure if it was the main motor burning out/getting stuck or something else, but I now have a dead floppy drive. Any ideas? Is the main drive motor replaceable?

The floppy alone standing on top of the metal frame ? Without any protection in between ?

So probably the board got shorted by the frame.

Can you get any high resolution pictures of the PCB on your FDD?

It was standing free of the computer's frame, sitting on the workbench on top of an upside-down internal floppy drive mount.

Could it be a similar problem I had with a SE/30 drive a while back? https://68kmla.org/bb/index.php?threads/blown-component-on-sony-mp-f75w.44807/

I tried running it without the eject motor, but this seem to kill a component (Q4) on the drives PCB.
