Best 68k Paint program/image editor?
Posted by: Kouzui on 2024-10-20 20:57:31
Looking for a drawing program that can run on a System 7 68040 that supports color, and hopefully some kind of swatch system, as well as an undo history. Also, I'm NOT looking for a vector editor (like Illustrator) What program best fits the bill? I've already tried Painter 4 and Kid pix but neither are quite what I'm looking for. (Unless someone knows if you can set up swatches in Painter 4).

Would Photoshop work? I know it probably doesn't have swatches.
Does Adobe Indesign exist on System 7?

Maybe? I might try Photoshop 4 (I've used photoshop 3, albeit on IRIX, and it was kind of a pain to use, so I'm a bit sour on it).

To be honest though, I'm looking for the closest Mac Analog to DeluxePaint on Amiga, to do pixel-style (or at least nonaliased) art. Looking it up, Studio/8 or Studio/32 might fit the bill, but from screenshots I can't see if they have a swatch like DeluxePaint does.

Okay fair enough. What kind of Mac are you using?

IIci with Bolle's 040 accelerator, and System 7.5.3

Ooh sounds like a solid setup. I would love a desktop Mac II of some sort - all I end up with is compact Macs and PowerPC stuff 😅

Hey now, I love my other macs - Especially my SE30, Classic, and G3 minitower. They all serve some kinda purpose.

But yeah, especially with the 040, the IIci is kinda awesome to use. Highly recommend.

True. I'm in talks to potentially get a Quicksilver 1GHz G4 tower with a Zip drive, so while having a desktop 68k Mac would be cool, you're right - they all serve their own purposes.

Aldus SuperPaint? I don't remember if it has all the features you want.

I was thinking of SuperPaint too but you can check Deneba Canvas also (my dad used it on a LC 630 back in the days to create drawings for its research publications).

Painter 2.0 or 3.0 (not sure if 68K) would fit the bill of being more advanced image creation programs, also found Dabbler - a simpler version of Painter

SuperPaint is also my go to paint app but pretty basic.

GraphicConverter might do what you want

I used SuperPaint 3 quite a bit with my PM4400 in the Mac OS 8 days. I even wrote an Amiga HAM-mode plug-in for it I believe.
