| ZIP drive upgrade for G3 B&W |
Posted by: feltel on 2024-09-16 08:00:46 I got myself a nice B&W G3 tower. I'll upgrade it with parts I have on hand. I have a NEC made internal ZIP drive I put inside the G3. But the drive sticks out around 5 mm. I dont think thats gonna work with the drive bezel I have to aquire. The screw holes do align and there is no other method to mount the drive. At the back there is a metal "bumper" so I cannot slide the drive any further into the case. How is this meant to work? I dont know if the Iomega drives (with the dark frosted bezels) were a little bit shorter or do have other screw holes, but I doubt.

Posted by: Dude.JediKnight on 2024-09-16 17:39:28 I really can’t recall exactly what model of Zip100 that I put into mine (as it’s probably been at least 2 decades now). I bought mine ages ago on eBay, a package deal with both the drive and the appropriate Zip bezel for the front of the B&W tower. Not sure if it was the Apple part number drive, or if it’s different from the standard IDE/ATAPI ones used in other PCs.
My memory says it was a simple install… but I don’t really remember the specifics. Your photos look more or less correct to me, and the Service Source documentation seems to agree. It does stick out several millimeters beyond the metal caddy in their photo as well.

Posted by: feltel on 2024-09-19 10:04:46 Thanks alot. I got hold of a drive bezel and will report back if it fits. |
Posted by: feltel on 2024-09-23 08:00:11 The bezel arrived today. It fits like it was built for it. :-D All in all it seems no problem to fit non-Iomega drives.

Maybe I'll paint the drives dust cover and face plate black or better dark grey at a later time. |

Glad to hear that it fits. It’s been so long since I installed mine, but I had no memory of it being difficult or having any issues with it.
I can’t even remember what front bezel mine has… but it’s been a solid decade since my B&W was getting daily use. |
