Pulling files off of an SE to reuse
Posted by: Lord Refa on 2024-08-26 13:34:21
Have an SE with a working drive that has the OS (7.0.1) and a bunch of software that I want to keep and archive onto a zip drive. The System 7 folder has a System 7 disk image folder with image files, would I just use that to install the System 7 onto another mac? Was thinking of just copying the whole drive over (a LaCie 40) and using those files on my SE/30, what do you think or suggest? Thanks!

First, archiving things onto a Zip drive is like asking when a ticking time bomb will go off: it or the drive will fail not if but when.

Second, so you are trying to back up your whole SE? What machines do you have access to? Do you have some sort of SCSI emulation device? How do you normally get files between all of these machines?

this may be survivorship bias, but barely any zip drives failed after the "Click Of Death" scare

It sounds to me like you're working with a Mac System 7 smi file (self mounting image) and you want to use it to install a new OS on the SE/30. Yes, if it fits on a Zip disk you can do it. Just put the image file on a zip and use it on the SE/30. Don't copy the mounted images to the zip.

That’s fair, but non-volatile media is another concern. It would be like backing data up that’s important on a 35 year old floppy.

Thanks guys, LaPorta, I think I should be OK to use this as a short time solution to move native files around. And Mike, good to know, I should only copy the System 7 image files, not the System 7 already on the HD, correct?

Oh short term, absolutely! When you said archive them on the Zip, that was what raised a red flag to me.
