Tales from the VCFWest Free Table: Kensington Maccessories Surge Suppressor

...one in an ongoing series of items grabbed from the Free Table at VCFWest this year...

Between about 1984 and 1986, Kensington marketed a line of "Maccessories" designed for the 128K, 512K, and Plus. ss-multi.png

Included in this line was the "Surge Suppressor", which was color-matched to early Macs (and the Lisa).

Mine has seen better days:

Advertisements showed this mounted on the back of a Mac, which if it were possible, must have involved some kind of sticky tape long gone from my unit:

The OEM appears to be DialCo, and the device itself is described as a "cord-connected filter":

Opening it up, I think I see why this device was on the Free Table:

After re-soldering that coil, I wonder if there's any other preventative maintenance I should do? Here are some shots of the components on the board:

"For use with : Apple Macintosh and Lisa." - because no other computer would use 120 volts in the states. 😉

Nice job on the board, maybe cover it with UV-curable solder mask, if that's ok for a surge suppressor.
