Replacement 512k keyboard RJ11 jack
Posted by: jmb2011 on 2024-08-08 23:21:29
Title pretty much says it all, I’m hoping to see if there is some kind of replacement for the RJ11 style phone jack that connects to the keyboard.

I’m having issues getting my keyboard to work. I have already replaced the coiled cord itself and reflowed the solder joints on the keyboard / jack but still having issues getting the keyboard to consistently work. It will only work sometimes if I wiggle and pull the coiled cable harshly to one side.

I’ve tried a mac plus keyboard in this Mac and it works fine. So the Mac itself is okay. I tried this non working keyboard on another mac and it does the same thing. It’s got to be the keyboard / jack itself.

I also checked continuity between the pins and the solder pads on the board and I get continuity through the multimeter but still can’t get keys to type. The only thing I can figure is that there might be a broken pin underneath the jack itself….. ideas?

It is recommended to replace the socket

Try cleaning the contacts in the RJ11 socket with a Q tip and IPA. It's not very likely to fix it, but it also costs next to nothing to try.

Where can one obtain a compatible socket?

I think it's a generic socket @jmb2011

This kind of socket is universal and can usually be easily purchased through the shopping platform in your country.

I'm in the same boat with a Mac Plus motherboard. It's actually a little hard to find the exact socket used; it's got a little flange on the top and the socket entry point is a certain height above the PCB.

That said I think this is it here: https://www.peconnectors.com/modular-plugs-and-jacks/hws5283/

Thanks for the link! I’ll have to try to get me one and see how it fits!
