RECOVERY! Classic and Classic II back booting again.

Posted by: Anonymous Freak on 2016-08-27 05:24:04 After doing some motherboard cleanup on both (yes, I'll need to re-cap them both at some point,) I managed to get both my Classic and Classic II working again.  The Classic also had a single wire loose on the analog board that I got back in place. Bonus: In finding working hard drives for them, I went through every single one of my 50-pin SCSI hard drives. 6 IBM/Maxtor/Seagate drives, all but one worked fine. Here are the seven Quantum drives.  One stack is "dead drives," the other stack is "working drives."  Can you guess which stack is which? To make it even more humorous, I had one more dead drive of the "not Quantum" variety. After being disappointed at finding a dead non-quantum, I happened to see the logic board, and realized that "CMS" was a rebranded - the logic board prominently says Quantum.  Oh, and the one non-Quantum? The Maxtor. (The company that bought Quantum.)

Posted by: Anonymous Freak on 2016-08-27 06:06:37 And of course, since I have the highest number of my compact systems working that I've had working in a long time, I decided to get them all set up for a "family portrait" - and the Classic II went back to big vertical bars.  Yup, will definitely have to recap him sooner rather than later.   :simasimac:

Posted by: techknight on 2016-08-27 07:06:59 All those drives are dead because the rubber is melted holding the actuator arm from moving. Usually fixable.

Posted by: techknight on 2016-08-27 07:22:30 thats probably because the head is stuck to the platter. if the hard drives are stored in heat and humidity for years, itll do that.
