Apparently, my iBook G4 is running Debian Wheezy (7.6) with XFCE. It was probably current when I last used the machine.

im struggling a bit. i got debian to install but i cant get the bootloader to work. i have grub on it but now have to option my way to a macX boot. gonna look into doing a firmware boot to that partition tomorrow.

Watch carefully the partitioning and formatting!

But at the end you cannot install the GUI software, even the text mode install is corrupted. you have to download a different .iso file: adelie-inst-ppc-1.0-beta5-20240426. (size 488,3mb) that is gonna work!

I had the same problems with debian. it seems that the version 12 is not well maintained for ppc. HOW did you install debian 12 on iBook/powerbook case it always stops installing when choosing the desktop environment etc.
Thanks fr you time, saxfun 🙂

i got xfce installed and core done. im stuck on grub bootloader atm. idk what to do about that yet. im not well versed in linux.
i think im going to try and manually add a boot loader to a bootstrap hfs partition instead of the installers default stuff.

i got adelle installed too but that is failing to boot. i had to manually make all the partions before install but i think the installer program is failing to copy some files so im going to try a CLI install next.

the other issue i am running into is the live KDE adelle is pretty laggy. idk if htat will change once its fully installed with gpu drivers but its way slower than ive seen others YT vids show...

in the meantime I got DEBIAN 12 SID installed! I could only install at first the minimal text version, without a lot of useful tools and I had to work very hard (cause i.e. "ifconfig" was not not installed) to get the eth0 working. But now debian is working as expected, except the r300 driver for the ATI Radeon 9600 card, "could not locate bios". But I did install a 2023 version of linux-firmware-nonfree . . . maybe my apt sources list is not the ideal one.
you have to fix grub like this guy, it is possible on the cmdline:
