AppleVision 750AV question
Posted by: MJ313 on 2016-08-22 16:52:03
Will an AppleVision 750AV work with a IIci (onboard graphics) or an installed Macintosh Display Card 4/8? It seems like it should based on the resolutions it supports (640x480 @66.7hz and up), but the Service Guide states a 68040 is required.  I mean, is that really true? Would a CPU limit what display it can drive?

I seem to recall the CPU limitation was because a bunch of the monitor controls interact with the Monitors and Sound control panel.

Well, I just confirmed my 1710AV doesn't work with the IIci onboard graphics or an MDC 4•8.  Works fine with Quadra 950 onboard graphics, though.  Not sure what about the CPU would do it, though.

Hey, thanks for testing that out! I really appreciate it. I guess the service manual wasn't lying. And that's a crying shame.

Radius to the rescue! The 750AV will work with a IIci (running 7.1.1), you just need a different video card.

I used a Radius PrecisionColor 8-xj that is a pretty pedestrian card, and it works just fine without drivers installed yet (640x480).

I will install the drivers and see what happens. Good news that the 68040 requirement was not true. For the few folk out there who care to use this setup. 🙂

Wasn't the internal iici graphics SOG out? I know these monitors will not turn on regardless of the position of the power button unless a H/V sync is detected.

They were designed to take full use of a powermac, not sure processor was ever an issue.  I have used mine for testing as it has a nice extra long cord.
