Shout out to JDW for Mac 512K repair
Posted by: David Cook on 2024-05-24 10:10:36
I recently developed a new application (Tiny Transfer). One of the project goals was to make the application work on the oldest to the newest Macintosh computers. I purchased a Macintosh 512K for this purpose, because the extra memory is helpful during development, the machine is otherwise identical to the Mac 128K, and they sell for less than the 128K on eBay.

As expected, the Mac 512K barely worked upon receiving it. To recap it, I watched videos by @JDW and used his capacitor parts list.

Although I relied upon Floppy EMU for booting, I needed to get the floppy drive working to truly test my application's compatibility during serial file transfer. Again, I turned to a video by @JDW

The lubricant on the floppy drive had turned to rubber. I mean that literally. It was springy and firmly attached to the metal. I had to scrape it, clean it with IPA, scrap it more, and so on. Eventually, I got the mechanism freed and re-lubricated. Those original Sony floppy drives are beasts! They are much more robust than later drives.

So, thank you @JDW for helping me get an old computer fully working. Your teachings make a difference to the community!

What is this Tiny Transfer software you speak of?

Looks very comprehensive! Is it possible to put a 64kB ROM in a Mac Plus? Does it just ignore the SCSI, or are there some other subtle differences that would prevent it from working?
