g4 from Yikes does not boot in a rev3 G3 Beige MT

I took a g4/350 zif from a working Yikes machine (I had it on for a few hours to check - it had to be recycled and the HD destroyed) and i wanted to put it in my Beige G3/300 to upgrade it. I had great care of the CPU. So today I open the machine, remove the original G3 and place the G4. Remove the battery, and press CUDA button for a few secs. Jumper the config block for 366 and power the machine. Nothing - no bong.
So I reconfig for 333. Nada. 300? not a chance.
Replace the CPU back to its G3, and voila, bong! It was at 300 after all. Sojust for kicks, I OC to 333 and obviously works. Lost all settings and date/time, but I was expecting that.
Why it does not work? I'm quite positive tha CPU was OK....

BTW, no I could not save it. The G4 was in the inventory and HAD to be recycled, they actually check SN and stuff.

Did you put the G4 compatible firmware on the machine first? You can't just swap in a G4 without updating the firmware to support it.

Hi Macuserman!
i was under the impression that only the B&W G3 needed that, not the beige - in case that’s… ehm the case, where would I find an updated firmware? The Beige G3 has a ROM dimm in it

Hmmm I was pretty sure they both did, but perhaps someone more sure of themselves can answer. 🙂 I think you can run sonnets updater or any other company without issue, no real reason not to as far as I know. They all did the same thing and that is just to get rid of the G4 check.

Open Firmware is what you are updating and that started being used around the Powermac 9500 I believe.

You also might have to replace the VRM on select machines to run a G4:

Step by step on installing a OWC G4 ZIFF (note you need software to enable cache):

And finally, a Yikes is just a B&W G3 motherboard of specific revision that uses ZIFFs at 100 Mhz FSB while Beige G3's can do 83 or more commonly 66 Mhz.

That was GREAT
i managed to make it boot however it freezes hard once it loads the extensions in 9.2.2 - I have a flashed r7000 and installed the ? latest ? Driver for it.
but at least it’s a step forward!!!!

Does it boot fully with extensions disabled?

Yes it does. Then I removed the Ati Radeon 1.0 driver from the installer and it boots normally - so it’s the ati driver
