LC3 overclock and custom cooling
Posted by: GameOverman on 2024-05-05 12:28:16
so got bored overclocked my LC3 with the resistor mod. It was getting hot, so I made a custom cooling solution
keeps it cool when running benchmarks and whatever else
any thoughts? 20240505_152026.jpg20240505_152139.jpg20240505_152030.jpg20240505_152152.jpg
here is a funny little, short I made

My LCIII is also overclocked. Thus far, I have yet to add any cooling methods at all, and it seems to have been running fine, though admittedly I don't use it super often or for very long at a time. That said, I do want to add at least a heat sync. Certainly an extra fan as well can't hurt! Different individual CPUs will run hotter or cooler, from what I understand, so if yours was running particularly hot after overclocking, it may be you've done the exact right thing with the additional cooling.

Yeah I noticed with the case on it got very hot and with thr case off it was hitting 100 f 😳 so now it's nice and chilly

After over clocking my LC III, I added a heatsink to the 68030. No extra fan. It is running just fine. The temperature is about 130-140°F on the heatsink. I have put it through a battery of the Speedometer benchmarks without any issues.

MC68030 specs show max operating temperature of 70C which is close to 160F. You should be good to go with just a heatsink but make sure you have a little bit of airflow in the case to keep things in check.

I bought this small heatsink/fan combo for my IIsi (Amazon link), it is designed for a Raspberry Pi. I haven't installed it yet, but it looks like it might be a good solution.

According to the manual, it appears that the 68030 is designed to operate between 0° and 70° C, which means 32° and 158° F, so if it's running at ~100° F, I'd say we're golden. Of course, the IR camera just reads the external temperature of the package, but even so, that seems like a good enough place to be in my mind.

EDIT: Just saw that @danny.gonzalez.0861@gmai already posted the temps, derp!

Nice this looks good 👍

I tried the resistor mod myself, but only ended up with the death chime. I even moved the resistor back to R14, and still a death chime. I'm hoping the hot air rework station just cooked the resistor, but we will see. The risks we take I guess.

Thankfully it's really just a jumper (a "0-ohm link"), so you could just bridge it with a piece of wire or a cut capacitor leg or something, and that would be a good way to test if it's really the component or if it's something else.

Yeah looks like a memory issues, resolved now.

No point in overclocking when heat affects stability. I stuck an 040/25 board into one of my LC III's and glued a slightly cut down heatsink to the CPU which barely allowed me to close the lid.

The boost to 33 from 25 is very minor. I'm not saying it's impossible for it to overheat, but I personally have not experienced any performance issues.
