sounds like the analog board is resetting due to overcurrent, try recapping the logic board and analog board

Are you certain that re-capping both boards will fix the problem

I'm certain

Did you measure the voltages at the floppy port?
There are a lot of parts on classic AB that can be defect. Most often: DP3 and DP4 (1N4148), TDA4605, CNY17G, IRFBC40. Could be that you have to replace some of these.
Recapping AB and LB should be done. Take the battery out of th LB.

Well.. It will certainly not work without doing this. If it is everything you need to do, you will have to find out.

What I am going to do is to have a computer repair technician open it up to remove both boards and send them out to a board repair company

Then it might as well be battery-bombed. The most reasonable strategy for you would likely be to trade your Mac to somebody here and buy a refurbished one instead.. 😕

You do not have to open the classic to measure the voltages. You can do it at the floppy port. The only things you need are a voltmeter and a little paperclip.

Please explain why you are certain that doing a re cap will fix the problem

Recapping is a required /necessary first step, but it won't certainly fix the machine, but it might. Other things can be wrong as well, but it is certain that the caps need replacing, as they always do on these machines and they cause damage by corrosion.

To warn you, it is often cheaper to buy a machine that has already been recapped than pay for one to be repaired. Most of us repair our own.

But interestingly, the Classic II is one of the easier logic boards to recap and if you're interested in learning skills, it might be a good first project. Would you be interested in learning?

I appreciate all of your help but keep in mind that:

1. I am not experienced in board level repairs.
2. One of you mentioned certain numbers that must relate to certain electronic parts but I have no clue what they are
3. I prefer to pay a professional to make the repairs necessary

Thanks All

Why did you get it in the first place if this is what you’re going to do?

It’s like you bought a classic car without checking under the hood, it got dropped off a trailer into your driveway, and now you’re wondering why it won’t start.

Then when people start giving you advice about the standard maintenance you need to do, you’re asking if each task will make it start when nobody knows what the damage or wear and tear actually is. And now finally you’re saying “I’m just sending it to a professional.”

Listen

1. I was trained to repair vehicles but not computers
2. It is my computer and my choice to use a professional to repair it so if you don’t like that I apologize but it’s my money to spend on my Macintosh Classic ii
