today I tried to connect a Quadra 950 to my NEC PA271W monitor with a VGA to DVI adapter.
It was this model https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00YTWQQUI/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Unfortunately I failed. What kind of setup should I use? Get another monitor? My desk bristles already
with stuff.....
Thx
Ralf
| Posted by: Macdrone on 2016-08-08 11:52:04 the issue is sync frequency I think. I dont think the newer panels support the old refresh rates. I keep an old lcd that support 640x480 just for testing with the db15 to vga adapter. But if you have a vga card it would seem it should support 1024 x768 and should work with just about all monitors with adapter but I am not sure.

Hi,
today I tried to connect a Quadra 950 to my NEC PA271W monitor with a VGA to DVI adapter.
It was this model https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00YTWQQUI/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I might be wrong, but this adapter converts DVI to VGA, not the other way around since it is an "active" adapter. DVI-D only contains digital signals.
DVI and VGA are quite different (one is a digital interface, the other is analog), sometimes it's easy to obtain VGA from DVI because the analog VGA-compatible signals are actually embedded in the DVI connector (like in DVI-I)

Converting VGA to DVI-D (Digital only) is doable, but a good converter is more expensive than the monitor itself.
I recommend getting an old 4:3 Dell UltraSharp: Picture quality is great, they have a wide range of inputs, support SOG (Sync On Green) and handle almost any resolution you throw at them
| Posted by: rsolberg on 2016-08-08 13:49:02 Ferrix97 is right. That adapter is intended to convert a digital signal on its DVI-D input into an analogue signal on its VGA output. Your NEC monitor is DisplayPort and DVI-D only, so it will not accept an analogue signal of any kind. There are VGA to DVI-D/HDMI converters out there, but in my experience they can be flaky and introduce visual artifacts, plus they require an additional power source. Ferrix97's suggestion of a 4:3 ratio panel that has analogue capability is a good one.

I might start looking for a Dell UltraSharp, they´re really cheap🙂
