Faulty Photobooster
Posted by: slomacuser on 2024-01-22 13:08:48
So I got this Radius PDS Photobooster. One of the pins was out of alignment. I have put it back. The card is recognised by driver but when using Photoshop filters it freezes the computer. Is anything that can be done to make it work again?

If you have a logic board out of a computer, I'd check continuity between the photobooster and the Quadra.

First find which soldered connection on the photobooster connects to the pin that was bent, then plug it into a board, and see if you can find any pin on the logic board that has continuity. Ideal if the logic board has a through hold PDS connector, I can't remember if they are.

If you have continuity from photobooster to the logic board, I'd check different versions of the drivers, plugins and Photoshop? Perhaps OS too?

Its oscillator could be faulty? I don’t know how to check that though.

Does it work intermittently or always crash when doing the same thing?

Have you got a thermal camera? Are the chips getting warm?

Try contact cleaner on the PDS socket and on the card. I’ve had 601 upgrade cards work intermittently as a result of a dirty connection.

Thanks @Phipli for suggesting software issue, it was 🙂 and @joshc for having radius mirror online. Downloading and installing was a snap.

Is that for the Quadra PDS slot? Or for connecting to a video card?

It is for Quadra PDS and can be used in pair with PrecisionColor Pro cards.

Oooh, neat. I hadn't seen that one before. I'd only seen the one that clips directly onto the card. How does it compare to the clip-on version for the GX? Or are you still testing it out?

I especially like how it lines up perfectly with the video card.

Didn’t test it yet but in Macworld tests it was slightly faster on some tasks than GX.

Did you get it like that? I would check the slot you installed it in and see if there is something wrong with it that pulled the pin out of alignment.

Next check that the pin has continuity to the card in case it broke off inside the connector.
