Posted by: mdwgw on 2024-01-16 18:48:40I just got a 3400c and had a question about compatibility with CD-ROM Drives. My 3400c did not come with a CD-ROM Drive and I am having trouble finding a 3400c specific CD-ROM drive- maybe I am missing something. Are CD-ROM drives (internal) from a G3 or other powerbook models that are compatible with the 3400c? Thanks!

You're probably just going to have to wait for a 3400 drive to show up. There should be a surplus compared to other parts given how many of them are now falling victim to PRAM battery leaks - plenty of units with bad motherboards but otherwise good parts to be parted out.

G'day all, I have 4x PowerBook 1400 CD ROM drives and neither works. What options do I have and does anyone know direct replacement for those? Any suggestions to get them working again? Cheers AP

Posted by: MacUp72 on 2024-05-29 11:54:51hmm, do you know with what model this is compatible to your knowledge of vintage laptops?
Posted by: 3lectr1cPPC on 2024-05-29 14:33:25Do you mean what mechanism could go inside the drive to replace a failed one?
I believe @techknight knows - I'll ask him on discord where he's far more active these days.

this *should* be the correct laser assembly, if it is indeed a sanyo drive, and if the laser being bad is the issue

Posted by: MacUp72 on 2024-05-30 02:30:43I repaired the catch mechanism of the CD drive, the drive wasn't staying in the chassis anymore, just popping out.
the little spring loaded lever would not return to a straight 90 degree position and therefore not catch the chassis.
you must disassemble the parts to get to the bottom and clean off all the ancient grease..after that it snaps right into position again.
ok, one prob down..inserted in the 3400c again it is beeing recognized but it has a hard time reading a cd, it starts, stops, starts..
maybe an adjustment problem?
edit:
I found a culprit, a little spring inside has deattached from somewhere🤔
