| Help identify a PB 1xx modem |
Posted by: Shaddam IV on 2024-01-12 00:41:44 Hello, two internal modems have come into my possession. One is a "Powerbook Fax/Data Modem 820-4048 A" and is made by Apple Computer Inc c 1991. according to what's printed on it. I have no clue who made the other one. Have a look at the attached files. Have you seen this modem? Do you know what make it is? And... What drivers would help me use these modems? Thanks! Have a great day, Karl |
Posted by: Gunzel on 2024-01-12 01:00:56 I’d say I t’s a Global Village PowerPort of some description.
Based on the V.32 in that AT&T chip it’s probably a 9600bps, or possibly 14,400bps if it is V.32bis. In Global Village’s product range I think that corresponds to Bronze and Silver. I think 14.4k was the highest they went for PB1xx internal modems, or maybe the 28.8k was just really expensive (back in the day I bought a Silver 14.4k for my PowerBook 160). |
Posted by: demik on 2024-01-12 01:44:10 That's weird because unless I'm missing something Global Village Modems are labelled Global Village (here is mine for reference)

That hing has a mini DIN9 connector as well, right ? (It's difficult to see in photos)
One thing not well known from PowerBook 1xx, is that their modem slot is also a SPI bus, so you could do some complex stuff with that slot.
That thing does look indeed more complex than a standard modem (there is a DSP as well…) |
Posted by: Shaddam IV on 2024-01-12 02:34:44 There is a Mini DIN something connector: |

I believe @Gunzel is right. When looking real close, the device says "Global Village Communications". I'll try installing Global Village modem software (if I find it in the Garden) and hopefully that software will tell me what this card is. Thank you very much! |
Posted by: Gunzel on 2024-01-12 03:00:46 Strange it has a mini DIN instead of an RJ11. I had a look on eBay and the ones on there looks different again than the OPs and the one from @demik |
Posted by: Shaddam IV on 2024-01-12 03:01:39 Maybe because it's a European version? |
Posted by: Gunzel on 2024-01-12 03:17:53 I reckon it’s a PowerPort/V.32 based on this Tidbits article. Sounds like it needs an external dongle that plugs into the Mini DIN 9. |
Posted by: Shaddam IV on 2024-01-12 03:21:22 Great, thanks! A PowerPort/V.32 at 9,600 bps! Nifty! |
Posted by: Gunzel on 2024-01-12 03:25:42 A lot more at The Ancient Gaming Noob (also) and what look to be the drivers. |

My bad, didn't see that silkscreen
Do we have a picture of the external dongle ? |
Posted by: GRudolf94 on 2024-01-12 14:19:22 What's missing is called a DAA (Data Access Arrangement). It'd have looked somewhat like a PhoneTalk adapter box. |

It'd have looked somewhat like a PhoneTalk adapter box. Or this (genuine Apple one + disembodied PB 1XX modem card)

Posted by: Shaddam IV on 2024-01-18 13:54:11 I‘ll look. Some dongle came in the box, I believe, I‘ll check. Thank you! |
