I finally recapped entire iigs system. Looks great🙂 i dont have proper floppies and i want to see it boot from something. I need more memory as well. It is rom 0 or rom 1. What will this boot from?

If you have a BMOW FloppyEmu it can boot from that. Otherwise you can write an 800K floppy with most 68K/PPC Macs.

Oh sweet. Does it have to be a certain file system? And what version? 5? Thanks!

Depends how much memory it has. ROM 0/1 are 256K base which will only boot the 1.x system disks, but if there's a memory expansion card that obviously goes up.

ok. Yeah, need more memory. Will have to check what rom I have for sure. Do the floppy drives need recapping? not sure if they even work as I have never booted this

I’ve never heard of recapping the floppy drives. They’re the same Sony drives as a Mac Plus or SE.

ok, thanks. I will see about the Macintosh garden for floppy images. I would imagine I need more ram for sure, Just interested to see this one come to life and play something on it.

Press Control-Open Apple (Command)-Esc when you see Check Startup Device. Use the arrow keys and Return to select Control Panel and then RAM Disk, and see what it says for "Total Free RAM".

Unless something has changed, you should be able to download the GSOS disk images from that site. Otherwise, it should boot into the base ROM even without any floppies.

Well, snagged a 4 meg memory card.. will see how it works once it arrives. What scsi card do i need to get hard drive installed?
Posted by: volvo242gt on 2024-02-10 16:17:35
There are multiple cards available. The one in mine is the Apple II High-Speed SCSI card.

You might want to look into the CFFA3000, actually. Can use either CF cards or USB flash drives.

I would also recommend getting this:

Here's the rest of the stuff they offer for the IIgs: https://www.reactivemicro.com/product-category/apple2/iigs/

ROM 00 machines are limited to running ProDOS 16, whereas ROM 01 machines can run GS/OS up through version 6.0.4 (the final version) with enough RAM.

Did you recap the monitor as well? If so do you have a cap list? I have been meaning to do mine forever but haven’t gotten around to it. It would be nice to confirm I have the caps on hand first though.

console5 sells a kit and also has capacitor lists:

They also sell an upgraded resistor for R513:

When I recapped mine, R513 was a little toasty looking...
