| PowerBook Duo 280c display question |

I'm about to buy a 280c from a friend, and the display looks a little strange. Before I buy this computer I would like to know if this is a problem and if so, if its fixable.
Any ideas on what it may be? |

It is developing vinegar syndrome by the looks of it. Probably been closed for a long time or a higher humidity area. Can be fixed, but can be a pain for sure |

Glad to know that its fixable! I was not sure if it was vinegar syndrome or not. It will surely be a pain but hopefully I can successfully replace the polarizer. |

That 280c is a 2300c in disguise from the looks - notice the PowerPC sticker. That's a lucky find - I'd get it, even if the LCD ends up being a complete goner. Could always find another 280c to throw the PPC board in. And that is 100% vinegar syndrome. |

Yes it is a 2300 conversion, nice eye. Unfortunately the board is green light no power so needs some work. That will be a whole new can of worms |

If you're lucky than it will just be bad caps. Fair chance, they like to go out. The 2300c in theory should have less issues with them since it's newer but IIRC bad caps on the PowerBook 190s and 5300s can cause GLOD so you have a chance. I've also heard that the Duos can be temperamental in general with booting. Try the button on the back when you get it. |

My friend tried the back power button and it still had green light no power. Caps have some dull pads so replacements are needed for those. Hopefully Caps is all it needs. It also had some battery corrosion around the main battery connector but that cleaned up good on the board minus the connector itself which I can replace. |

If the cap pads are dull then I'd personally place my bets that replacing them will bring it back. Hope so! |
