Appleshare for 4mb Mac plus
Posted by: bigbangtech on 2023-12-17 13:03:31
I have a 4mb Mac plus with 7.5.5 and I was able to get it to work with bluescsi/wifi along with mactcp, and I can use macweb to do basic browsing.

My next goal is to get appleshare working so I can access file shares on my network.

I've tried installing Appleshare Client 3.7.2, but it complains about not enough memory (3000k needed vs 2800k available).

I've tried disabling extensions and using nofinder, but it's still not enough.

Any workarounds so I can get to file shares on another Mac or emulator? Possibly going down to 7.1 along with anything else?

7.5.5 is very poorly suited to a 4MB Mac, 6.0.7 or 6.0.8 is the best choice from a performance / memory position, and 7.0.1 for compatibility. I really strongly recommend never installing anything newer than 7.1.2.

Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.

System 7.1 also needs about 1MB. But personal file sharing is built-into System 7.0 and later, so why do you specifically need AppleShare Client? And if so, why 3.7.2, isn't there an earlier version with lower memory requirements?

I've been looking for Appleshare Workstation 3.6
5 with no luck so far. Where/how in 7.0 do I access a file share on a another Mac? It's been a while.

From the Chooser in the Apple Menu.

I may need to install fresh 7.0 from scratch, chooser doesn't do anything when clicked for me

Have you got AppleTalk turned on, the correct port selected in the Network control panel, and have you clicked on AppleShare?

There are a lot of consumer WiFi access points over which AppleTalk doesn't work. Be warned.

Optimem saves a bit of RAM too, although I don't know how much. I have my Plus with 7.5.5, 7.1.2, 6.0.8 and I think something older can't remember.
