| Online Vintage Gaming? |
Posted by: ClassicGuyPhilly on 2023-12-14 14:59:04 Seems there are quite a few folks with or building G3 and G4 class gaming machines. Are there any vintage online gaming servers? I remember having a blast playing Quake II online back in the day. Unreal Tournament looks pretty cool too (never played back then).
Would be fun to game online with other forum folks. Could even do US/Canada vs European vs AsiaPac skirmishes ๐

Posted by: LaPorta on 2023-12-14 15:05:00 Quake III servers are up and running still. Same goes for RTCW, there are servers still up. I think Red Faction is the same. |
Posted by: ClassicGuyPhilly on 2023-12-14 15:23:29 Quake III - right on! Now trying to remember if I played II or III online, maybe both. Regardless, all your base are belong to us! ๐ |
Posted by: LaPorta on 2023-12-14 15:50:14 I'm definitely down with playing a game...just need to find a reasonable time. |
Posted by: ClassicGuyPhilly on 2023-12-14 16:40:31 Cool, yes I'm sure finding a good time will be a chore.
Who else would be in? |
Posted by: ClassicGuyPhilly on 2023-12-15 04:53:12 I installed Quake III Arena for OS9 last night. I most definitely did not play this version back in the day. Was able to handshake with some Quake 3 Internet servers, but seems this install is a lower version than the servers were running, so couldn't connect.
I didn't feel like figuring out how to upgrade, so played a few single player games. Even on easiest setting, the computer opponent would kick my butt 3 or 4 frags to my 1. Guess I need more practice!
Getting back to late 90s Quake II online, does anyone recall a team vs team playing field (I think was a CTF format) with two facing, mirrored multi-level castle-like buildings? I seem to recall playing this a lot, and loving the sniper rifle. And this is where I first was exposed to the infamous words "all your base are belong to us" |
Posted by: LaPorta on 2023-12-15 05:00:50 Getting quake up to speed is incredibly easy. Iโll get you the latest patch. Thereโs even a version made today (ioquake) that can get you playing on the most recent Macs. |
Posted by: ClassicGuyPhilly on 2023-12-15 05:06:15 Sweet thanks! I think for our 68kmla to-be games, we should restrict play to vintage machines, much cooler that way ๐ |
Posted by: LaPorta on 2023-12-15 05:46:11 oh yeah, I'd use my G4....just saying it has survived even into the present day. |
Posted by: treellama on 2023-12-15 06:05:18 Sadly, Marathon can only be played online on modern computers. It just missed the beginning of online play in 90s shooters. |
Posted by: LaPorta on 2023-12-15 06:16:05 Yes, there are "ways" to make it work by making virtual AppleTalk networks over the internet, but it usually doesn't run well due to latency. |
Posted by: ClassicGuyPhilly on 2023-12-15 06:21:40 Gotcha, thanks for the Marathon info. Maybe will be an opportunity to play together IRL sometime. |

Gotcha, thanks for the Marathon info. Maybe will be an opportunity to play together IRL sometime. I think there are ways. You can AppleTalk over the internet as long as the latency isn't an issue |
Posted by: SparrowRat on 2023-12-15 06:37:49 I'd be very excited to participate, although I don't think I'll get great performance out of my 333mhz g3 ๐ |

Gotcha, thanks for the Marathon info. Maybe will be an opportunity to play together IRL sometime. Yeah, I checked in Mโพ๏ธ. There is a remote access option in the hosting dialogue box.

Posted by: LaPorta on 2023-12-15 06:43:03 Yes, I've seen ways to do AppleTalk over IP and I think also ARA the same...but that remote access option I think only works with real Apple Remote Access. |

Yes, I've seen ways to do AppleTalk over IP and I think also ARA the same...but that remote access option I think only works with real Apple Remote Access. Yes... So that means you can play Marathon over the internet? |
Posted by: LaPorta on 2023-12-15 07:00:31 Yes, I actually had posted that earlier in the thread that it is possible. However, most of the time, ARA is not usable today because.....what two people have modems and analog landlines? |
Posted by: ClassicGuyPhilly on 2023-12-15 07:02:59 @Phipli does this mean you'll play Q3A or some other game with us? Or are you...yellow? ๐ค |

ARA is not usable today because.....what two people have modems and analog landlines? Erm... Doesn't ARA works over other types of network? Or am I going crazy?
Besides, there are other ways of connecting to remote AppleTalk Zones?
@Phipli does this mean you'll play Q3A or some other game with us? Or are you...yellow? ๐ค I don't really play games, it's not my thing. |
